Morro Bay is famous for the big rock that sits in the bay, appropriately called Morro Rock. It is a volcanic plug, which is created when magma hardens within a vent on an active volcano. Over time the surrounding rock erodes while the plug does not. It's quite impressive. The rock protected as Morro Rock State Preserve and is also a nesting site for Peregrine Falcons (as well as many other bird species), so no climbing allowed!
The boys were visiting their cousins, Lucy and Katie. We've been to California before, but Cooper was a baby at the time and they lived further north, so we had never been to Morro Bay. We did a lot of exploring while were there; we went hiking, tidepooling, and kayaking; we saw sea lions and sea otters, but no swimming (too chilly!).
