Cole's 4th grade field trip was a boat tour of the Thimble Islands in Stony Creek, CT. I was lucky enough to be able to join them and I'm glad I did. I had heard of the islands before but had never been to see them.
They are not named for their size but for the thimbleberry, a type of black raspberry, that used to grow on them in abundance.
There over over 100 islands in the archipelago (depending on the tide), the largest is over 17 acres and is owned by Yale university. But, most of the islands are private and there are about 90 homes scattered over the 25 inhabited islands, all made of pink granite and many with trees and even grass. The pink granite in this area was used to make the base of the Statue of Liberty.
These islands are rarely for sale, but if you hurry and act now you can have this one, your own private gazebo on a rock, for only $375,000. But it also comes with a dock. You may think that's expensive, but not if you knew that one of these islands sold for 23.5 million, 7 years ago.
One person currently owns nine of these islands. She created her own flag that she flies on the top of her islands' flag poles. If you look at the first picture, you can see that flag, it kind of looks like a green tree on a white background.
Check out that solar array! If only we could fit that on the boat, we'd never need to plug in!
Wow! We've never been there either but mostly because we draw too much.
